“Laboratory” is a standalone project by Skyeng School, designed to support a hybrid learning environment.
A key requirement was to develop a concept easily scalable both within Russia and internationally.
We proposed a flexible concept in three sizes: S, M, and L — anticipating the uncertainty of the leased spaces in which these schools would operate. To adapt to different local contexts, we introduced eclectic design elements reflecting regional identity.

The concept is based on the idea of fractals, which supports both the spatial and conceptual logic. The scalable layout system allows for rapid site selection and project deployment.

The overall spatial concept follows the active office model, since 90% of learning happens online — all students need is a physical workstation and power outlet.

The environment is designed in such a way that students can customize it to suit themselves adjusting light, color, sound, and microclimate. Students can choose to work in quiet or dynamic areas, in darker or brighter spaces, and shift between active and passive zones. A rich tactile and visual experience is created using a variety of materials.

Special attention was given to the base layouts, ensuring acoustic comfort by separating loud and quiet areas. Key technical and economic indicators were developed, including space capacities for each format, standard blocks for restrooms, Zoom rooms, waiting areas, furniture types, and navigational design — all consistent across the project.

Each size includes a different set of specialized zones:

  • Size S: Zoom room, retractable wardrobe, reception desk with workspace, snack bar access, game zone combined with a retail area, media screens, a transformable amphitheater, functional windowsills, fire blankets at the entrance.

  • Size M: Added features include a full-service café, a gym also used for dance classes, staff areas, meeting rooms, a dedicated classroom, vending machines, doctors’ and psychologists’ offices.

  • Size L: Includes a dining hall with kitchen facilities, more relaxation areas, and diverse learning and workspaces with various finish options.

A recognizable element across all sizes is the use of neon signage, dynamic lighting scenarios, and removable false walls and floors, allowing the project to be disassembled and reinstalled elsewhere.

The design of the educational environment must support the learning experience.

Hybrid learning is growing rapidly, and we foresee the launch of more such schools in the near future.
